What Are Ghost Jobs?
Ghost jobs are job postings that appear active but may not result in hiring. Common reasons include:
The position was already filled but the posting remains active
The company is collecting resumes for future needs
The role is posted for compliance reasons with no intent to fill
High turnover leads to constant reposting
Types of Warnings
Stale Job Warning
Jobs that have been posted for an extended period receive staleness warnings:
| Age | Warning Level | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 30-45 days | Low | "Posted over a month ago" |
| 45-60 days | Medium | "This job has been open for a while" |
| 60+ days | High | "May no longer be active" |
Older postings aren't necessarily bad - some specialized roles take longer to fill - but it's worth considering before investing time in an application.
Frequently Reposted Warning
When the same job title appears multiple times from the same company within 90 days, you'll see a repost warning:
| Reposts | Warning Level | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| 3-4 times | Medium | "Frequently reposted role" |
| 5+ times | High | "Proceed with caution" |
Frequent reposting can indicate high turnover, unrealistic expectations, or perpetual "fishing" for candidates.
How to Use These Warnings
Do
- Factor warnings into your application priority decisions
- Research the company further if you see warnings
- Check company reviews on other sites for context
- Still apply if the role is a great fit - warnings are informational, not prohibitive
Don't
- Automatically skip every flagged job
- Assume all flagged jobs are problematic
- Ignore great opportunities just because they're older
Dismissing Warnings
If you've researched a job and determined the warning doesn't concern you, click the dismiss button on the warning badge. The warning won't appear again for that specific job.
